Ventura County’s General Services Agency (GSA) Fleet Services Department has been ranked as a Top Green Fleet in the 2023 Green Fleet Awards competition by NAFA Fleet Management Association (NAFA).

The county was awarded 10th place in the NAFA 2023 Green Fleet Awards, the Fleet Service’s highest all-time ranking for the award, following three consecutive years placing in the Top 50 Green Fleets.

NAFA is the vehicle fleet industry’s largest membership association.

“This national ranking from NAFA demonstrates the county of Ventura’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and investment in clean energy,” said Matt LaVere, chair of the Board of Supervisors.

“The ingenuity and dedication of county staff to pursue future-focused projects is reflected in the year-over-year recognition of their hard work and this year’s ascension into the top 10 ranking,” he said. “This is an outstanding achievement for the General Services Agency and the county of Ventura overall.”

The NAFA Green Fleet Awards are open to some 2,000 fleets from private and public sectors. The contest acknowledges leaders in sustainability and recognizes peak-performing fleets with enhanced practices and innovative green initiatives to make a positive impact on the environment.

Honorees are rated based on a variety of metrics including written submissions with 50 organizations ultimately being recognized. Applicants from across the country include state, federal, airport, and university fleet entities.

“I cannot express how proud I am of my team for being able to achieve this award,” said Chris Melton, GSA deputy director of Fleet Services. “Transitioning to clean transportation while also minimizing taxpayer expense is a difficult feat. Fleet Services has put in a significant amount of work in greening the Ventura County fleet, and we have only just gotten started.”

Among its accomplishments, Fleet Services achieved 332 tons of greenhouse gases savings annually through its environmental efforts. This was completed by nearly tripling the plug-in electric vehicle count by the end of 2023 compared to 2022, and the launch of seven electric vehicle infrastructure projects within three years.

The county’s green efforts include requiring the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible to serve each county agency’s mission.
