San Marcos girls water polo took down Carpinteria in a tight non-league matchup by a score of 15-13 on Tuesday at San Marcos’ pool.
The Warriors struck first, racing out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter thanks to plenty of forced turnovers.
However, the Royals struck back and held the momentum for most of the second and third quarters as San Marcos held a 10-6 advantage heading into the fourth.
Carpinteria then fought back, cutting the Royals’ lead down to 10-9 early and 14-13 midway through the fourth.
However, San Marcos held on and, when the final buzzer sounded, the Royals walked away with the 15-13 victory.
Scarlet Akin turned in a great all-around performance for San Marcos, scoring two goals, drawing three ejections and coming away with four steals. Maxine Knocker was the top goal scorer for the Royals with four goals to go with her two steals.
Meanwhile, Shea Estabrook tallied three goals including two penalty shots and Jessica Prykhitko found the back of the cage two times to go along with a trio of assists.
For the Warriors, Giulia Piccoletti led the offensive attack with five goals while Lilli Nemetz scored four.
Hazel Dugre scored twice and Caden Lemere and Devyn Clayton rounded out Carpinteria’s goal scorers with one apiece.
The Royals (2-0) will take on Orange Lutheran on Wednesday at Santa Barbara High at 5:10 p.m. while the Warriors (1-1) will hit the road to match up with Oxnard on Thursday.
