Northbound Highway 101 in Santa Barbara was shut down late Monday night after a suspected DUI collision involving a wrong-way driver, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.
The crash involving a Toyota Tundra pickup truck and a minivan occurred shortly before 11 p.m. just past the Bath Street offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Tundra, driven by Teodulo Navaclemente, 38, of Santa Barbara, was headed south in the northbound lanes when it slammed head-on into the van, which was driven by Carlos Gutierrez Ramirez, 49, of Oxnard, CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez told Noozhawk.
Two people were critically injured in the collision, while a third person had moderate injuries, according to fire Battalion Chief Michael Hoose, who added that a multi-casualty incident was declared.
All were taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Their names and details on their conditions were not available.
The driver of the pickup, which came to rest on its side, had to be extricated from the wreckage.
Navaclemente was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving, Gutierrez said.
At least three other vehicles sustained damage from debris in the roadway following the collision, but none of their occupants was injured Hoose said.
After the collision, northbound traffic was detoured off the freeway at Bath Street, and the northbound freeway remained shut down well past midnight.
Crews from the Montecito Fire Protection District assisted on the incident, which was under investigation by the CHP.
