A man was fatally injured early New Year’s Day in a fall from a utility pole near Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 1:40 a.m. to the incident on the 2600 block of Puesta del Sol, near the Museum of Natural History, said fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.

The man climbed a tree, then attempted to cross over to the utility pole when he plunged to the ground, Safechuck told Noozhawk.

The victim, who had been attending a party and may have been under the influence, suffered major head trauma in the fall, Safechuck said.

He was treated at the scene, then transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, according to Lt. Jarrett Morris of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau is conducting a death investigation, Morris said.

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies also responded to the incident, Safechuck said.
