Elsie Hoffman Barrett, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Aug. 20, 1927, to Elgin and Lela Moyer.
Elsie attended Manchester College, where she met Vern Hoffman. They fell in love and got married. Their first few years of marriage they were missionaries in Puerto Rico and in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland. They loved the Lord and served him well.
Elsie enjoyed bowling and golfing and also watching college and professional sports. She worked as a highly-respected and loved secretary at Highview Jr. High, Salem Covenant Church and Bethel University — all in New Brighton, Minnesota.
Elsie and Vern retired in Sebring, Florida, where they were active members of the Church of the Brethren. They loved their visits from the kids and grandchildren.
After Vern passed in 2007, Elsie moved to Timbercrest Retirement Community in North Manchester. She enjoyed living near her sister Mary, and made so many nice friends in the Timbercrest community. There she met and married Joe Barrett and enjoyed he and his wonderful family.
Elsie’s daughter brought her to live in Santa Barbara the last year and a half of her life. She was lovingly cared for at Abundant Care and Villa Alamar where she made many friends.
We want to especially thank Villa Alamar for their wonderful care of our mom. We are also thankful to Central Coast Hospice for their care of in her last two weeks of life.
One son, Marvin Gerald, adopted in Puerto Rico, preceded Elsie in death at age 2 1/2. Two brothers Roy and James Moyer and James’ wife Eleanore also preceded Elsie in death.
Surviving Elsie are her son Robin Hoffman (Bianca) of Custer, Wisconsin; son Christopher Hoffman (Kathy) of Prescott, Wisconsin; daughter Amy (Joe) of Goleta; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sister Mary Mason of Timbercrest; and many nieces and nephews.
