A two-vehicle crash left a Lompoc man dead and three others with serious injuries Wednesday morning in the Lompoc Valley.

Emergency personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol and America Medical Response were dispatched at 8:49 a.m. to the area of Highway 1 and Santa Lucia Canyon Road due to a crash, according to fire Engineer Mike Gray.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and was later identified as Larry Vanderhoofven, 85, of Lompoc, according to CHP Officer Michael Griffith.

A passenger, Patsy Vanderhoofven, 84, of Lompoc received major injuries and was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center, Griffith said.

Two Santa Maria residents in the other vehicle, Ulises Sanchez, 33, and Severiano Avila, 21, received minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The CHP said Larry Vanderhoofven was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze eastbound from Santa Lucia Canyon Road attempting to make a left turn onto Highway 1 when the crash occurred.

A 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by Sanchez, was traveling southbound on Highway 1 when the vehicles collided within the fast lane.

Traffic on Highway 1 in the area was affected while crews investigated the crash and removed the wrecked vehicles.

CHP officers from the Buellton area were investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, but said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors.

Additional information was not immediately available.
