Santa Barbara High Track & Field turned in a strong showing while competing against Cate, Righetti and St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at Peabody Stadium.
Elina Stump shined on the girls side, winning four events in her high school debut. The freshman won the 200-meter race (26.98 seconds), the long jump (16-1), the triple jump (33-7.5) and was a member of the 4×400-meter relay.
“That’s a pretty spectacular first high school meet for Elena,” Santa Barbara coach Olivia Perdices said. “She’s a kid who just shows up, learns and takes any challenge we throw her way. She’s not afraid to work in the weight room, on the field and on the track.”
The other members of the 4×400 meter team were Sophia Guerrero, Corrine Hulford and Mackenna Show, who also won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:34.93.
Krystal Valdez picked up a pair of wins in throwing events, winning the shot put at 27-0 and the discus at 95-6.
“Great openers for Mackenna and Krystal,” Perdices said. “They’re two of our captains and came out and competed like it today.”
The Dons also swept the 300-meter hurdles with Julianna Aviani, Sierra Gronquist and Ashley Lemons. Gronquist came out on top in the 400-meter race as well.
On the boys side, Andreas Dybdahl led Santa Barbara High with a personal best in the 400-meter race with a time of 50.38 seconds.
In the 3,200-meter race, Blaise Snow, Dybdahl and Sasha Tanasychuk swept the race to continue the Dons’ strong day.
Tanasychuk also won the 800-meter race (2:02.56) and was a part of the first-place 4×400-meter team along with Chris Lopez, Magne Henriques and Bode Andrulaitis.
“It’s fun to coach kids with some range and versatility who are willing to move into distances outside their comfort zone,” Perdices said. “Today was a great early season test with a good mix of teams. There was a lot of solid competition all over the track and field.
“We had a good day opening things up at home and getting a read on where we are and what we need to do to get where we want to go.”
