A Solvang resident equipped with a garden hose knocked down a weekend fire at a house not far from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School.

Santa Barbara County fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said firefighters were dispatched at 6:20 p.m. Saturday to the 800 block of Carriage Drive, off Mission Drive/Highway 246 west of North Refugio Road.

Occupants of a single-story house smelled smoke and left the home, he added.

A resident used a garden hose to contain the fire to the attic above the garage, Safechuck said.

The fire was knocked down before firefighters arrived at the scene, but the blaze caused moderate damage to part of the house.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Safechuck said.
