A pedestrian was struck by a train and killed Wednesday afternoon in Montecito, according to the Montecito Fire Protection District.

The incident occurred shortly before 1:40 p.m. in the Fernald Point area, said Christina Atchison, a fire district spokeswoman.

She described the victim, who was declared dead at the scene, as a “male teenager,” but no other information about him was available pending notification of relatives.

A witness told Noozhawk the victim was with a group of juveniles who were walking along the tracks, headed to a birthday party nearby.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau were dispatched to the scene, along with firefighters and sheriff’s deputies.

The train involved reportedly was a northbound Amtrak, but that could not be confirmed.

Additional details were not immediately available.
