Semana Nautica’s biggest weekend of the summer concluded on Sunday with 10 water-based events for locals to compete in.
Following the races for men and women of all ages, the California Beach Volleyball Association held the annual Santa Barbara Open. The full story on the tournaments can be found here.
Ironguard Race
The ironguard race features three legs: a short sprint, a swim out to a buoy and a paddle around another buoy out in the ocean. While Saturday’s ironguard was a relay, Sunday’s was an individual race.
In the women’s race, 21-year-old Brittney Gamble came out on top of the six-person field. Rounding out the top three were Makenzie Beard (14) and Cassidy Bear (12).
As for the men, Foster Campbell, 28, crossed the finish line first. Coming up behind Campbell were Kyle Visin (41) and Jason Smith (45).
Three-Mile Paddle
The next event of the day was a long three-mile board paddle, with 26-year-old Ben Brewer taking the first-place spot with a time of 1:08.52.
Campbell finished just behind Brewer at 1:08.54 and Nick Bobroff, 43, placed third after finishing in 1:11.50.
The first female to cross the finish line was 47-year-old Heather Allen, who recorded a time of 1:17.03.
One-Mile Paddle
In the shorter of the board races, Visin registered a time of 14:54 and placed first.
Gamble added to her successful day after finishing second and as the first female racer with a mark of 15:25.
Chuckie Roth capped off the top three finishers after he got out of the water in 16:05.
500-Meter Ocean Swim
Brewer continued his winning ways in the ocean swim, placing first and finishing the race in 7:30 as the lone racer under eight minutes.
39-year-old Andrew Maxwell finished the race in 8:10 for second place while Mardell Ramirez, 26, was third place overall and the first place female at 8:20.
One-Mile Team Swim
In the lone team event of the day, there were teams of different sizes competing in a one-mile swim in the ocean.
The top one-person team in the field was 55-year-old Eric Bleuel with a time of 31:34.
As for two-person squads, the top duo was Evan Simoni, 34, and 26-year-old Mila Dorji. Simoni finished in 26:48 while Dorji clocked in at 32:35.
Finally, the trio of Sia McAvoy (31:23), Hillary McAvoy (31:43) and Paul Castleborg (32:05) took home the gold in the three-person team race.
Three-Mile Swim
In a field full of competitors of all ages, 14-year-old Noah Warkentin came in first place in the three-mile swim with a time of 1:01.38.

The second-place finisher was 21-year-old Kyle Brill while 40-year-old Myles Peck slid into third place.
The top female finisher without a wetsuit was 20-year-old Noel Partridge (1:12.02), and Avery Newman’s time of 1:09.27 was good for the top female with a wetsuit.
Biathlon
Visin won his second race of the day in the beach biathlon, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:13.15.
The rest of the top three was Arjun McAvoy at 1:16.20 and Roth with a mark of 1:18.05.
Whitney Bruice, 54, was the first female finisher in the biathlon with her time of 1:21.12.
Kids’ Paddle Sprint
The youthful swimming community came out to compete in the kids’ paddle sprint event, and 12-year-old Kumoni Roth earned a first-place finish.
Following up Roth was 11-year-old Kinley Walsh, who was the first girl to cross the finish line as well. 12-year-old Gunner Marshal placed third.
Women’s Paddle Sprint
Gamble rounded out her day with a first-place performance in the women’s paddle sprint, finishing the race in 2:56.
15-year-old Keira McAvoy placed second with a time of 3:09 while Annick Lamb, 38, slotted into third place at 3:32.
Men’s Paddle Sprint
Brewer made it a three-peat in the men’s paddle sprint race, placing first with his 2:31 mark.
The other two members of the top three were Dino Ise (19) at 2:34 and Garret Haller (19) with a time of 2:35.
