A bicyclist was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries Wednesday morning after being hit by a vehicle on the 3500 block of State Street.

The collision involving a blue GMC truck and a man riding a bike occurred at around 8 a.m. near the intersection of State Street and North Ontare Road.

Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Dustin McGrew confirmed that there was a “collision with injury” at the scene and that the cyclist was taken away.

Witnesses near the scene said the bicyclist was pinned under the truck before firefighters arrived.

Liz Melendez, who works at Vices and Spices, said that she saw the bicyclist ride past the shop’s front window. She said that not long after he rode past, she heard a noise, and she saw the truck stopped.

“Everyone else just stopped, too, and you could hear the guy groaning,” Melendez said.

Jon Turner, a battalion chief for the Santa Barbara Fire Department, said that firefighters received the call at 8:15 a.m.. When they arrived at the scene, the man was face down with his leg pinned under the truck’s front wheel.

Firefighters were able to free the man by using a jack to lift the truck. He was then transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

His name and details on his condition were not available.

The driver of the truck was at the scene of the accident, which remained under investigation.
