Authorities have released the name of the 21-year-old driver killed in a crash west of Santa Maria late Saturday night.

Jesus Antonio Mata-Garcia, 21, of Santa Maria died in the crash on Highway 166 (West Main Street), west of Hanson Way, Raquel Zick, spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau, said Monday.

At approximately 11:10 p.m. Saturday , personnel from the Santa Barbara County and Santa Maria fire departments were dispatched to the three-vehicle crash.

Mata-Garcia, the driver of a Nissan Kick, was traveling east when he started to overtake a 2008 Nissan Frontier that was ahead of him, California Highway Patrol Officer Maria Barriga said.

The Nissan Kick’s driver used the left turn lane to overtake traffic when the vehicle collided into a westbound Dodge Journey, which may have been in the lane waiting to turn, Barriga added.

The impact of the crash pushed the Dodge Journey into the Nissan Frontier.

The driver of the Nissan Kick was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the Nissan Kick’s driver had been seen earlier crossing double yellow lines and passing vehicles.

CHP officers are trying to identify and locate the male driver of the 2016 Dodge Journey after he handed a 1-year-old child to a bystander and left the scene, Barriga said.

The child had moderate injuries and was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center, the CHP said.

Eribertha Martinez-Amado, age unknown, a passenger of the 2016 Dodge Journey and mother of the infant, was questioned about the identity of the driver, Barriga said.

CHP officers were investigating the circumstances that led to the crash, but believe alcohol was a factor, Barriga added.

Martinez-Amado and the Nissan Frontier’s driver, Wendi Pacheco-Lopez, 32, of Santa Maria received minor injuries, the CHP said.

Anyone with information about the crash can call the CHP’s Santa Maria Area Office at 805.608.6310.

Both lanes of West Main Street between Santa Maria and Guadalupe were blocked for several hours due to the crash.
