The county Board of Supervisors has supported a plan to reduce speed limits on nearly 36.5 miles of road by five miles per hour. The plan will also reduce the speed limit on two sections of roadway by 10 miles per hour.
California Assembly Bill 43 (AB 43) provides cities with more flexibility when establishing speed limits in business and residential districts.
AB 43 allows for reducing speed limits after considering the safety, land uses, and concentration levels of bicyclists and pedestrians, especially those from vulnerable groups like children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
AB43 also allows lowered speed limits on sections of roadways in a business activity district.
County areas with roads that qualify for a five mile per hour-speed limit reduction under AB 43 include Orcutt; Alamo Pintado in Santa Ynez; the Eastern Goleta Valley; and Via Real between Summerland and Carpinteria.
