One person was killed and another was critically injured on Tuesday in a head-on crash on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Village, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The collision occurred at about 10 a.m. in the northbound highway lanes near Constellation Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One person was declared dead at the scene, said fire Capt. Scott Safechuck.

The deceased’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.

One vehicle came to rest on its roof after the crash, and heavy extrication was required to remove a patient from the wreckage.

A patient with major injuries was taken by AMR ambulance to the Lompoc Valley Medical Center.

A county helicopter had been dispatched to fly the patient to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, but was canceled due to the person’s life-threatening injuries, Safechuck said.

That patient’s name and details on their condition were not available.

Highway 1 was shut down in the area of the crash, but one lane subsequently reopened.
