Santa Barbara’s senior softball players are looking for new talent in town.

For over 30 years, a group of local slow-pitch softball players ages 50 and older have come together at Elings Park on Monday and Thursday mornings for some friendly competition.

Most of the players who take the field are over 60 years old with the majority in their 70s, but the action is open to all players of any skill level over the age of 50.

While having fun remains the purpose of the games, they remain competitive. A number of current members compete at the national level, traveling in the Senior Softball World Championship circuit.

While there have been plenty of competitive games over the years, the committed group of players that make their way up to the Elings Park softball field has dwindled over time.

So, the current players are hoping to find some senior athletes around town to play games at Elings Park from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Those interested are welcome to join.

Along with the recreational play during the day, Elings Park Coordinator of Leagues and Umpires Clyde Bennett has a more competitive softball league for those ages 50 and older on Monday nights.
