As construction to replace the southbound Highway 101 San Jose Creek Bridge continues, drivers can expect a traffic switch on Thursday.

Travelers heading north or south soon will use the southbound lanes of Highway 101 across the bridge. Until the traffic switch, two-way traffic will continue on the northbound side, according to Jim Shivers, a public information officer for Caltrans.

The traffic switch is expected to happen Thursday, weather permitting.

The next phase of construction will focus on the approach slabs, which are the transition pieces between the roadway and the bridge, and the installation of barrier rails, Shivers said.

The $20 million project is expected to be completed in June 2026.

Shivers said that in that time crews will be working on drainage, the concrete median, resurfacing the roadway, and a final stripping to be followed by landscaping.

The landscaping is a big reason as to why the project won’t be officially completed until June 2026, Shivers explained. The planting and taking care of new plants can take several months before plants take root and begin to flourish.

Additionally, work is continuing on the San Jose Creek Bridge along State Route 217.

During the next phase of construction, crews will be working on paving the approach to the bridge, installing barrier rails and guard rails, and landscaping the median, according to Shivers.

The bike path adjacent to the bridge has been renovated to make it wider for cyclists and includes new lighting and railings.

The eastbound State Route 217 on-ramp at Sandspit Road will continue to remain closed throughout construction.

The $26 million project is expected to be completed this summer.
