Bishop Diego softball piled on runs early and often en route to a 16-0 mercy-rule win over Valley Christian Academy on Monday in Santa Barbara.

Tara Gregson led the offensive effort, going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Meanwhile, the Cardinal duo of Madeline Ferries and Anna Fittipaldi hurled a combined no-hitter with seven strikeouts in five innings.

“It was a team victory today,” Bishop Diego head coach MeLinda Matsumoto said. “Every athlete got into the game today and contributed to our success. I’m proud of how this team works together to make things happen.

“Our seniors have really stepped up to lead this team on and off the field.”

The Cardinals started with a bang by plating six runs in the first inning, including a two-run single from Keke Flores and an RBI single off the bat of Gregson.

Bishop Diego stayed hot with six more runs in the second, two coming off a double from Gregson while Penny Carroll, Ferries, Natalie Rodriguez and Chelsea Hayes all drove in runs as well.

From there, the Cardinals scored three in the third and added one more in the fourth to finish off the win.

Flores and Carroll each ended the day with two hits while Fittipaldi and Ferries drove in two runs apiece.

Bishop Diego will be on the road against Santa Clara on Thursday.
