San Marcos track & field swept a tri-Channel League meet with Rio Mesa and Buena on Wednesday at Warkentin Stadium.
The Royals’ boys team earned an 81-46 win over Rio Mesa and a 91-35 victory over Buena. Meanwhile, the girls took down Rio Mesa 81-46 and defeated Buena 89-37.
Logan Patterson Deakyne won the 400-meter race and 300 hurdles with personal-best times of 50.67 seconds and 40.89 seconds, respectively. He was also the anchor in the first-place 4×400 relay.
“Logan is a very talented, strong runner,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “I am so impressed with his determination to test himself and to keep working hard to improve. I am so proud of Logan.”
Meanwhile, Jeremy Strand was a double winner in the shot put and discus events, Ethan Ball won the 110 hurdles and Cole Heckman placed first in the 800-meter race.
“Jeremy put together a solid day in both of his events,” Hantgin said. “Ethan has put in so much work. He has great technique over the hurdles. I have coached a lot of hurdlers over the years and Ethan is one of the best I have ever coached.”
As for the girls, Elsie Tuttle captured victories in the 800 meter (2:31) and 1,600 meter (5:28). Meanwhile, Avery Leck won the 100 hurdles (15.03), 100 meter (12.52) and the long jump (16-5). She also placed third in the 200 meter.
“Elsie ran well today. She did what she needed to do to get the win. She is running smart and efficient,” Hantgin said. “Avery competed against the fastest girls in the league from Buena. Buena has very fast runners and it’s nice to compete against the best.”
Autumn Richardson rounded out the girls top performers by taking first place in the 3,200 meter (11:47) and second in the 1,600 meter (5:30).
“This was her first ever 3,200 race and I think she found her race,” Hantgin said. “Autumn continues to work extremely hard in practice and it’s showing in practice.”
Dos Pueblos vs. Pacifica
The Charger girls came out on top while the boys dropped their meet with the Tritons on Thursday at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
“The key for us today was in the continued improvements we’re making individually and as a team,” Dos Pueblos head coach David Jackson said. “There are so many PRs (129) that it’s hard to find a standout moment.
“But, we see great things coming up as our students get more experience. We’re putting together a good team.”
Harper Wolfe Lyons led the girls by coming out on top in three individual events, winning the 100 hurdles (17.40), shot put (31-1) and long jump (16-10.5).
Hazel Burgess won the 100 and 200-meter races, including a personal best of 13.07 seconds in the 100. Luna Gnagy also placed first in the high jump and pole vault at 4-10 and 9-6, respectively.
Other individual event winners included Lucia Riley (400 meter), Vienza Machuca (800 meter), Cate Bishop (1,600 meter), Vero Durham (3,200 meter), Clehann Howard (300 hurdles) and Alix Hollingsworth (94-6).
Both relay teams also came out on top with the 4×100 squad of Howard, Riley, Kaley Orqiuola and Tabitha Weller finishing first while Abby Chou, Ruby Gomez Witcher, Sterling Streatfeild and Cecilia Vargas won the 4×400 relay.
On the boys side, Andy Brennan (400 meter), Ashton Smedley (800 meter), Declan Marston (1,600 meter) and Hayden Graham (3,200 meter) all won their respective events.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Navarro (300 hurdles), Hugo Cea Loewe (shot put), Jack Campbell (high jump), Elliot McGuire and Benjamin Edwards (discus) all earned podium finishes.
Dos Pueblos will host San Marcos and Santa Barbara High in the Crosstown Showdown on Wednesday, April 2.
Santa Barbara High vs Oxnard, Ventura
The Dons boys team earned a win against Oxnard but fell to Ventura while the girls team dropped both matchups on Wednesday in Oxnard.
“The team fought hard today and had a lot of bright spots we can keep building on,” Santa Barbara High head coach Olivia Perdices said.
Elina Stump won the 100 hurdles with a personal best of 15.37 seconds while taking second in the long jump at 17-2.
Malachi Johnston won the shot put at 50-7, a personal best, and earned second place in the discus at 143-5.5.
Meanwhile, Carter Battle won the high jump at 6-0 and William Covington placed first in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 4:36.72.
“Elina and Malachi keep stepping up their game and it is great to have Carter back out with us,” Perdices said. “William is really coming into his own and competing on a new level.”
