Dos Pueblos track & field split up to compete in the Mo Green Invite and the Meet of Champions this weekend.
The Charger girls squad turned in strong performances at the Mo Green Invite at Oaks Christian while the boys shined at the Meet of Champions at Arroyo High.
Alix Hollingsworth led the girls with a first-place finish in the discus after a throw of 99-6.
“She’s such a positive member of our leadership,” Dos Pueblos head coach David Jackson said. “It’s exciting to see her push closer to that 100-foot mark.”
The Chargers had several pole vaulters impress as Julia VanDeVeier (10-0), Alex Rogers (8-0) and Kaya Hernandez (7-8) represented the team in the event. VanDeVeier placed sixth while Rogers came in 11th.
Ruby Streatfeild made her debut in the long jump with a mark of 15-6.
Meanwhile, Phillip Contakes and Ashton Smedley led the Dos Pueblos boys in the 1,600-meter race at the Meet of Champions. Contakes came in sixth at 4:25.66 while Smedley finished in 4:27.48 to take ninth.
Owen Abbott, Oliver Saleh and Linus Martin all competed in the 1,600-meter race as well.
“All of our guys took charge in their heats, and learned a lot from such tough competition,” Jackson said. “When they reach May, they’ll be ready to race their way into CIF.”
In the 3,200-meter race, Ian McMurtry’s personal-best time of 9:44.12 earned him second place while Eamon Gordon registered his second-best time ever of 9:17.5 in a competitive heat.
“Eamon ran a great race, and pushed his way up through the crowd and put himself in the right position,” Jackson said. “His form held strong, and he looked like there’s a lot more time to come off the clock when his training has him peaking for championship racing.”
The Chargers will be back on Wednesday, April 2 to host crosstown rivals Santa Barbara High and San Marcos at 3 p.m. at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
“It’s an honor for DP to get to host the meet against our crosstown rivals, as they’re led by such highly reputable pillars of the education community, Coach Hantgin and Coach Perdices,” Jackson said. “Their teams bring the best out of us each season.”
