Avery Leck led the way as San Marcos track & field competed in the first day of the Stanford Invite on Friday.
Leck captured first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 61.91 seconds. It was her first time ever running the event, which she is now ranked No. 1 in California and No. 11 in the United States in.
“She ran really aggressively,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “Avery is fearless. She has a great attitude and takes on new challenges with such ease.”
Logan Patterson Deakyne won his heat in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.27 seconds, which ended up being good for fifth place overall.
“Logan had the advantage of being in the inside lane so he could see his competition,” Hantgin said. “He ran with confidence and ran down the leader in the last 50 meters.”
The boys distance medley relay squad of Cole Heckman, Ben Callanan, Ashton Johnsen and Gage Minne ran a competitive race to round out the San Marcos participants.
“They are a special group of guys,” Hantgin said. “They have been running together for four years. The Stanford Invite is a fun trip for the seniors to end their last track and season.”
The Royals will continue competition at the Stanford Invite on Saturday.
