One person was fatally injured and another was hospitalized with serious injuries Thursday afternoon in a three-vehicle collision on Modoc Road near Santa Barbara.
The crash was reported at 12:32 p.m. at Modoc Road and Via Senda, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 19-year-old Goleta man was driving a 2011 GMC Terrain eastbound on Modoc Road when he crossed the double solid yellow lines into the westbound lane, the CHP said.
The GMC first collided head-on with a 2023 Audi A4 driven by an 87-year-old Goleta woman, then struck the side of a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by a 49-year-old woman from Mariposa, the CHP said.
The GMC overturned and came to rest against a raised concrete barrier.
The GMC driver, who had to be extricated from the vehicle wreckage, was critically injured, the CHP said.
He was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the CHP said.
His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The Audi driver suffered major injuries and also was taken to the hospital.
Her name and details on her condition were not available.
The Camry driver declined medical treatment after being evaluated at the scene.
Authorities closed Modoc Road in both directions in the Via Senda area following the crash, with investigators at the scene.
“At this time, it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in this incident,” the CHP said in a posting on Facebook.
