Oversized vehicles will no longer be allowed to park on most Isla Vista streets under a new measure approved Tuesday by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors.

The all-hours parking ban, aimed at improving emergency access and alleviating safety concerns, will apply to more than 30 streets throughout the college student-heavy neighborhood. Officials say the move addresses community concerns about visibility obstructions, roadway congestion, and hazards caused by large vehicles parked for extended periods.

Under county code, oversized vehicles are generally defined as those longer than 22 feet or taller than 7 feet, including RVs, box trucks, large trailers and camper vans.

Affected streets include Camino Corto, Embarcadero Del Mar, Del Playa Drive and Sabado
Tarde Road, which stretch from El Colegio Road down to the oceanfront.

County officials believe that the ban will increase parking availability for residents.

The restrictions come after the county repealed an ordinance in April that limited
oversized vehicle parking only during nighttime hours. The updated rule, passed by resolution rather than ordinance, streamlines the process for enforcing the restrictions and applies them around the clock, according to the county.

The measure includes similar bans for select streets in other unincorporated areas, including Montecito — at Butterfly Beach and the Hot Springs trailhead — the Eastern Goleta Valley, the Santa Maria Valley and Vandenberg Village.

The ban in Santa Maria Valley areas are meant to “address safety issues with public health and safety hazards caused by oversized vehicles parking adjacent to agricultural farmlands,” the county said in a staff report.

County Public Works officials estimate that installing and maintaining signage will cost about $16,000 annually.
