A 29-year-old man was arrested Monday after allegedly assaulting a sleeping person by attempting to set him on fire, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at about 7:30 a.m. to the incident on the 500 block of East Yanonali Street, Lt. Antonio Montojo said.

“A subject was lying underneath a blanket when the suspect set the blanket on fire,” Montojo said. “At the time of the call, the fire had already been put out by a passerby.”

The intended victim was not injured, Montojo said, but the man’s blanket and clothing sustained burn marks.

Officers identified Joshua Woodruff as the suspect in the attack, Montojo said, and he was located a short time later on the 800 block of East Montecito Street.

Woodruff was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of assault likely to produce great bodily injury and arson, both felonies.
