A pedestrian near a bus stop was critically injured Friday afternoon in Santa Maria when a driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle in a parking lot.
At approximately 3:45 p.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Fire and Police departments along with an American Medical Response ambulance crew were dispatched to an incident in the 200 block of East Betteravia Road.
The driver was traveling south in the Target parking lot near the former David’s Bridal shop when he lost control of the white sedan, which hit a bus shelter and rolled over, according to police Sgt. Matthew Kline.
The vehicle ended up on its roof in one of the lanes on East Betteravia Road, just west of the main entrance to the Target shopping center.
The female pedestrian was on the sidewalk when she was struck by the vehicle, Kline said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if she was waiting for a bus at the time or just near the shelter.
The pedestrian was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment of critical injuries, police said.
Her name and details on her condition were not available.

The driver received minor injuries in the crash.
Members of the Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Bureau were investigating the incident.
Additional information was not immediately available.
Westbound lanes of East Betteravia Road west of the shopping center entrance were closed for a time for the investigation.
