One person was killed Saturday night when a vehicle veered off Highway 101 in Santa Maria and landed in a restaurant parking lot, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.
The crash occurred at about 9:15 p.m. in the northbound freeway lanes near the Main Street offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Police said the vehicle — a Dodge Charger — struck a K-rail on the offramp before overturning, crossing Nicholson Avenue, and slamming into a pickup truck parked in the IHOP parking lot.
The identity of the person killed was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Motorists were being allowed to use the offramp, but not turn left toward Main Street.
The crash was under investigation by the CHP.
