Firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a residential structure fire in Hope Ranch.

Emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. to the fire in the home on the 1200 block of Silvestre Road, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The first crews on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the residence, and were able to knock down the flames in about 15 minutes, Safechuck said.

Firefighters checked for extension of the flames into the home’s attic, and ensured no one was inside the structure.

No one was home when the fire broke out, Safechuck said, adding that a dog and a cat perished in the blaze despite efforts to revive them.

A Santa Barbara city firefighter sustained a minor injury during the incident, Safechuck said, and was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Firefighters remained on scene doing mop-up and overhaul of interior hot spots.

Cause of the fire was under investigation.
