It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that the Solano Family announces the passing of our cherished son and brother, who departed this life peacefully on April 10, 2025, at the age of 71.
Mel Jr. was a beacon of strength, whose presence always illuminated our lives in ways words can scarcely capture.
Born on July 27, 1954 in Santa Barbara, Mel Jr. embodied resilience, strength and grace.
From the beginning, he navigated life with an unwavering strength. His pure will to live when the doctors had given up, and his purpose to achieve milestones left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
“Little Mel,” as his loved ones knew him, fought to live and be recognized when others had given up on him. He wouldn’t be counted out.
He would defy the odds, after having to live through his younger years in Porterville State Hospital, where doctors had told our parents he wouldn’t be normal — Little Mel would prove them wrong.
With a body that would keep him in a “chair,” it wouldn’t keep him from finally getting to live his life the way he wanted.

At 18 years old, Mel was finally able to have a place of his own, attend a few college classes, and live life on his own terms.
He enjoyed working for a time, and many people would come to know him and find out what a friend they’d have in him.
Mel enjoyed diverse hobbies from collecting Star Wars models to collecting Ham radios.
He was also interested in the solar systems and collected many poster picture collections and books of solar systems that showed planet locations for the year, and he enjoyed looking at the planets through telescopes that our Dad had gotten him.
Mel loved music and had quite an eclectic collection from The Beatles, and rock bands, while also enjoying listening to Enya. He was open to so much while enjoying his space.
While Mel enjoyed living alone for most of the time, he loved having outings with the family, but mostly when Gram would cook for him his favorite bean & cheese burritos and Café de Olla.
Melvin Jr is preceded in death by his mother Alicia S. Perez; father Melvin J. Solano; and just recently, his younger brother Paul Solano.
Mel Jr. is survived by his younger brothers Gary A. Solano, Steven Solano (Polly), and Nick Solano (Gloria); his sister Karen Lenore Villa; and Paul Solano’s wife Veronica; along with many nieces and nephews.
Among the many joys of Mel’s life was the love shared during family visits, with Gram (his mom), Mickey, Dad, and his brothers, sisters or nieces and nephews who would show up unannounced.
It was always great to see Little Mel’s perturbed face when we’d show up at his door without notice. He would always act this way; however, he secretly loved it and never wanted to bother anyone or have them go out of their way for him. These visits were always too short.
Little Mel was not just a family member but a source of unconditional support and only a phone call away. He was always ready to offer love and guidance that will be dearly missed.
We invite all who loved and cherished Little Mel to join us in celebrating his life. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 at Carpinteria Cemetery.
For those who would like to share more memories and enjoy a meal, we will be heading to Giovanni’s in Carpinteria directly after the service.
Though Little Mel has left us, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched. His love, laughter, and unwavering kindness will forever be etched in our memories.
As we navigate the sorrow of his absence, we are comforted by the profound impact Little Mel had on our lives.
As we bid farewell to our beloved Little Mel, we are reminded of the fragility and beauty of life. We are grateful for the time we had and the memories we created, which will sustain us as we move forward.
Mel’s life was a shining example of love, resilience and strength, a legacy that will endure for generations.
Rest peacefully, Brother. You will forever remain in our hearts.
Our family would like to thank Tri-Counties Regional Center for having Mel’s best interest all these years, and ensuring he had the care needed. Also, his in-home nursing care, Med-Surg agency that spent many hours caring for him.
