Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a fire in an office building in downtown Santa Barbara.

Crews were dispatched shortly after 3:15 p.m. to the fire at 1421 State Street, according Battalion Chief Cory Cloud of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

The two-story structure near the corner of Micheltorena Street houses offices for law firms, tech and insurance companies, and others.

The fire started in a large rubbish file on the exterior of the building, with flames extending into the first floor, Cloud told Noozhawk.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames and prevent them from extending into the second story, he added.

Most of the building occupants were able to return to their offices once crews doused the flames and cleared out the smoke.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
