Santa Barbara City College has withdrawn its participation from Friday’s Fiesta parade, citing concerns about recent immigration enforcement actions.

Raids by the Department of Homeland Security at recent cannabis farms in Carpinteria and Camarillo have sparked fear and concern some immigrant communities.

SBCC board chairman Jonathan Abboud said it was not appropriate to celebrate this year.

“SBCC Trustees and staff have opted to not participate in the Fiesta Parade this year,” said Jordan Killebrew, spokesman for Santa Barbara City College, in a statement. “Given the climate and recent activity of ICE in our community we stand with our students and community in support. “

The decision is the latest pushback against the Old Spanish Days celebration. Montecito Bank & Trust also withdrew participation in the parade, saying that some of its employees did not feel safe this year.

Some community members are calling for a name, change and rebranding of Fiesta arguing that Old Spanish Days celebrates colonization.

While the controversy around the event is not new, concerns have been amplified this year because of the enforcement actions against people of color.

Fiesta typically attracts tens of thousands of people to celebrate the four-day event, many of whom are immigrants, including vendors.
