A third suspect has been arrested in connection with a stabbing that killed one man and injured two others in downtown Santa Barbara on Friday.

Sergio Rivas, 30, was taken into custody without incident by investigators and was found in possession of a loaded firearm, Sgt. Brian Kerr of the Santa Barbara Police Department said Sunday.

At 12:20 a.m. Friday, several police officers responded to the 500 block of State Street after being flagged down by a passerby, who reported a man with a knife.

They found a male victim lying on the ground with a stab wound, and two other people nearby who also had been stabbed.

Additional officers, city firefighters and AMR ambulances responded to the scene, and the three victims were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

One man died due to his injuries, police said. The other two victims were expected to survive.

The first suspect arrested, Luis Gerado Terrazas, 29, was taken into custody Friday, police said.

On Saturday, police revealed the arrest of a second suspect, Juan Fernando Rios, 28, followed by Sunday’s announcement that a third man had been arrested.

Police didn’t say whether they expect additional arrests in the case.

Authorities have not released the name of person who died.

Beyond calling the stabbings “an isolated act of violence,” police have not provided other details about the incident, including any possible motive.

Investigators continue to pursue additional leads and encourage anyone with information to contact the Police Department at 805.882.8900.
