The Lompoc-Vandenberg branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will present a community Town Hall meeting to discuss education in Lompoc, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21.

Titled Let’s Talk about Education in Lompoc, the meeting will be held in-person at Dick DeWees Community Center, 1120 W. Ocean Ave., Lompoc; and via Zoom webinar.

The event is free to attend and live interpretation will be provided for both the in-person and Zoom audiences.

Topics will cover Measure M, TK-12; college and career pathways; and current challenges and priorities facing students, parents and educators in the community.

The event will also examine how the current federal administration’s policies affect Lompoc’s immediate, near, and long-term local educational policies and procedures.

Panelists Clara A. Finneran, superintendent of Lompoc Unified School District, and Kevin G. Walthers, superintendent/president of Allan Hancock College (AHC), will attempt to put these fundamental educational changes and potential challenges into perspective.

The panel will also address moderated questions submitted by the in-person and Zoom audiences.

“Public education is vital to equity,” said Dinah Perez Lockhart, president of the AAUW Lompoc-Vandenberg Branch. “The AAUW strongly advocates for high-quality, equitable public education at all levels, from pre-K through higher education.

“This critical Town Hall with our education leaders in Lompoc will help the community understand the current educational landscape, its issues and impacts.”

An in-person community reception will precede the Town Hall meeting from 6-6:30 p.m., offering a time to meet the panelists, LUSD and AHC trustees, community organizations, and review informational material. Light refreshments will be served.

Participants who attend online or in person will be entered into a drawing for gift cards to local businesses.
