Showcasing the rich history of surfing in Santa Barbara and honoring legendary surfboard shaper Renny Yater, the Santa Barbara Surfing Museum will have its grand opening, 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Surf ‘n Wear’s Beach House, 10 State St., Santa Barbara.
The free event will feature a gathering of iconic surfboard shapers, including Yater, Marc Andreini, Cooper Boneck of Mesa Surfboards, Bob Duncan from Wilderness Surfboards, and representatives from Pyzel Surfboards.
Guests will have the opportunity to meet these masters of their craft while exploring the museum’s collection. Local Santa Barbara-area surfing world champions are also expected to attend.
Museum visitors will step into a world where surfing’s past and present converge. The museum’s exhibits include:
• Surfboards – Classic and groundbreaking designs that illustrate the evolution of surfboard shaping and performance.
• Memorabilia – Vintage photographs, personal items from surf legends, and artifacts that capture the spirit and nostalgia of the sport.
• Collectibles – Unique treasures such as vintage ukuleles, surf magazines, accessories, and other cultural touchstones from California’s surfing heritage.
“This museum is more than just a collection, it’s a living tribute to the creativity, craftsmanship, and culture that make Santa Barbara a legendary surf destination,” said Roger Nance, founder of Surf ‘n Wear’s Beach House.
“Honoring Renny Yater’s contributions alongside other renowned shapers makes this opening especially meaningful,” Nance said.
The event will also spotlight Surf ‘n Wear Beach House’s own legacy, serving the Santa Barbara surf community since 1962. The store first opened in Summerland before moving to downtown Santa Barbara.
