A 14-year-old boy on an electric scooter attempting to cross Foster Road in Orcutt was injured and taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening.
At approximately 6:05 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash near Foster Road and Woodland Street, across from Ernest Righetti High School, CHP Officer Maria Barriga said.
CHP officers responded to the scene along with personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and American Medical Response.
“Preliminary information indicates that a white GMC Yukon was traveling westbound on Foster Road, approaching the intersection of Woodland Street, when a 14-year-old male operating an electric scooter attempted to cross Foster Road and was subsequently struck,” Barriga said.
The juvenile was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation with CHP officers requesting assistance from the public.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage is encouraged to contact Officer Naylor at the California Highway Patrol Santa Maria Area office by calling 805. 608.6310.
The California Highway Patrol encourages parents and guardians to have ongoing conversations with their children about safe riding practices.
Important measures to reduce risk include wearing a properly fitted helmet, staying alert, and understanding the rules of the road.
“While scooters and bicycles can provide independence and mobility, it is often around busy streets and intersections where extra caution is needed from both riders and drivers,” Barriga added.
Motorists also should remain especially vigilant when driving near schools and surrounding neighborhoods. Even outside of regular school hours, children may still be present and crossing streets, she said.
“We remain concerned about the well-being of the young pedestrian involved in this incident and extend our support to him and his family during this difficult time,” said Lt. Joe Rodriguez, commander of the CHP’s Santa Maria Area Office.
