A mother and her 6-year-old daughter were critically injured when they were struck by a vehicle in an unmarked crosswalk Friday morning in north Santa Maria, police said.

At approximately 7 a.m., officers with the Santa Maria Police Department along with personnel from the Santa Maria Fire Department and American Medical Response were dispatched to the intersection of North Miller Street and Dena Way for an incident involving a vehicle and two pedestrians, police Sgt. Shane Armstrong said.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located an adult female and her 6-year-old daughter who had been struck while in an unmarked crosswalk, Armstrong added.

While lacking painted lines on the asphalt, signals or lights, an unmarked crosswalk includes crossings at intersections where drivers must to yield the right of way to pedestrians whether safety features are in place or not.

The 6-year-old sustained major injuries, but was listed in stable condition. The mother also sustained major injuries, and her condition was unknown, police said.

The driver of the involved vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with law enforcement officers, Armstrong said.

Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in this collision.

The Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is investigating the incident.
