No. 6 Santa Barbara City College defeated Ventura College 3–1 (25-18, 27-25, 24-26, 25-19) on Wednesday at the Ventura College Athletic Event Center, improving the Vaqueros’ overall record to 14–1 and remaining undefeated in the Western State Conference at 4–0.
SBCC took the first two sets before dropping a tightly contested third, then closed out the match in the fourth to continue their four-match win streak. The Vaqueros are a perfect 6–0 so far this season.
Coach Kat Niksto highlighted the team’s continued growth following Friday’s victory over Moorpark. “We continue to try and learn and grow from each match, taking away a few things we can improve on, and celebrating a few things we did well,” she said.
Stephanie Groswirt continued her well-rounded play with 13 kills, 21 assists, 14 digs and two aces. Morgan Guardado added 27 assists, 21 digs, three aces, and a season-high eight kills.
Looking ahead, Niksto emphasized focus and leadership. “Slowing down their strong, balanced offense, and focusing on playing our game to the best of our ability,” she said.
“Our three co-captains – Bayley Padia, Valeria Bellodas and Morgan Guardado – have been a solid leadership group all season long. Focus on keeping our same routine for pregame warmups, and taking each match one game at a time.”
SBCC will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. against LA Pierce.
