A pedestrian crossing the street in north Santa Maria died Saturday night after being struck by a motorcycle, with Santa Maria police saying alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

At approximately 8:35 p.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Police Department, along with the Santa Maria Fire Department and an AMR ambulance, were dispatched to the collision at the intersection of Broadway and Williams Street.

Officers located both a motorcyclist and a pedestrian lying in the roadway, with each having significant injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was crossing eastbound in the north crosswalk of Williams Street when he was struck by a motorcyclist traveling north on Broadway, police said.

The impact caused the pedestrian to be thrown to the roadway and the rider to be ejected from his motorcycle.

Both were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

However, the pedestrian, a 25-year-old Santa Maria man, died due to his injuries, police said.

His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The motorcyclist, a 32-year-old man, also from Santa Maria, suffered serious injuries, police said. His name was not released.

Members of the Police Department’s Traffic Unit responded to the scene to investigate the collision.

Preliminary findings indicate that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, police said Sunday.

The roadway was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information can contact Officer Neil Medrano at 805.928.3781, ext. 1139.
