The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is inviting artists to submit proposals for an new public art opportunity, the Santa Maria Transit Center Mural Project.
The Santa Maria Transit Center, at 400 Boone St., serves as a hub of movement and connection for city-residents and visitors.
The city envisions a vibrant digital mural that celebrates Santa Maria’s cultural diversity, history, and sense of community pride. Once completed, the mural will transform the exterior wall of the Transit Center into a bold visual landmark in the heart of downtown.
The selected artist will receive a stipend to create a high-resolution, print-ready design suitable for large-scale vinyl reproduction and installation on aluminum panels. The city will oversee all production and installation costs.
“This project offers artists a unique opportunity to bring color, creativity, and local identity to one of our city’s busiest public spaces,” said Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services manager. “We’re looking for designs that capture Santa Maria’s movement, diversity, and welcoming spirit.”
The call is open to both professional and emerging artists living in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties. Priority consideration will be given to artists living or working in Santa Maria or whose work reflects the community’s cultural heritage.
