In this feature, Noozhawk spoke with Nadia Romero, Administrative & Operations Director at Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County, to learn how the organization is expanding access to civil legal services, supporting self-represented litigants, and protecting the rights of vulnerable residents across the county.

Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County

Question: What is the name of your nonprofit, and what is its mission?

Answer: Name: Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County (LAFSBC).

Mission: The mission of the Legal Aid Foundation of Santa Barbara County is to provide high-quality civil legal services to low-income and vulnerable Santa Barbara County residents to ensure equal access to justice. Since 1959, Legal Aid has provided legal services to those most in need in Santa Barbara County.

Q: What motivated the creation of your nonprofit?

A: LAFSBC was created to fill a local justice gap: many low-income residents, seniors, victims of domestic/elder abuse, and self-represented litigants lacked access to civil legal help (family law, landlord/tenant, public benefits, consumer law, etc.).

The organization was formed to provide free civil legal services and community outreach so people who cannot afford private counsel can still enforce their rights and access the justice system.

Q: How do you allocate your funding to support your mission?

A: LAFSBC’s funding supports direct legal services (attorneys and staff), the Courthouse Legal Resource Center, outreach programs, and volunteer/pro-bono programs.

Q: What types of events or programs do you run to engage your community and raise funds?

A: Legal clinics & outreach: Regular pro-bono/advice clinics by phone or in person (at various locations, including community centers) and courthouse self-help services.

Community education: Know-your-rights workshops, info sessions (e.g., tenant rights, domestic violence resources, etc.).

Fundraising & awareness: Annual fundraising events, donor outreach and community partner events.

Pro Bono projects: Volunteer lawyer programs that both engage local attorneys and expand service capacity.

Q: How can people get involved with your nonprofit or volunteer?

A: Volunteer attorneys: LAFSBC runs pro-bono/advice programs and often recruits volunteer lawyers for “advice only” outreach and specific projects — contact them through their volunteer/pro bono page or the main office.

LAFSBC also coordinates a Consumer Debt & Bankruptcy Clinic. To volunteer, contact Kate Lee at (805) 963-6754, ext. 116 or klee@lafsbc.org.

Non-attorney volunteers & supporters: Help with events, fundraising, community outreach, and spreading the word!

Donations & monthly giving: Financial support is accepted online via a secure donation form.

Q: What sets your nonprofit apart from similar organizations?

A: LAFSBC is a countywide civil legal services provider. We are the primary nonprofit dedicated to civil (not criminal) legal aid across Santa Barbara County, with offices in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc.

We offer both full representation and limited-scope/advice services, plus a courthouse resource center helping self-represented litigants — combining legal representation, advice clinics, and community education. We also have a longstanding local presence and partnerships with courts and community organizations.

Q: Can you share a fun fact or little-known detail about your nonprofit that would surprise people?

A: LAFSBC operates three courthouse Legal Resource Centers (helping self-represented litigants fill out court forms and understand procedures) —this service is a practical lifeline for people navigating the system alone.

Q: How do you share your nonprofit’s impact and updates with the public?

A: Email/Website/Social media: Visit our website to subscribe to our e-newsletter for periodic updates (www.lafsbc.org).

We also provide updates via the LAFSBC website, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Our annual report and audited financial statements are also published on our website. On occasion, we receive coverage from local news outlets and newsletters.

Q: What makes your organization trustworthy for donors, and are there other ways people can support your cause beyond donations?

A: LAFSBC provides our audited financial statements and the transparency in annual reports demonstrate accountability and responsible stewardship of funds.

We have an established local history and partnerships with the courts and community organizations show deep roots and trusted relationships within Santa Barbara County.

Our State Bar funding and inclusion in statewide legal services reporting provide additional oversight and ensure compliance with strict standards.

In addition to this, our client testimonials and impact stories highlight the real-world results of our work — showing how legal aid services have helped community members stay housed, gain protection from abuse, and achieve stability. These stories offer donors a clear view of the difference their support makes.
