Dennis Smitherman has been appointed interim director of the Recreation and Parks Department, Santa Maria City Manager David Rowlands has announced.
Smitherman’s first day in his new role was Dec 5. He succeeds Alex Posada, who retired that day after 32 years as director and nearly 47 years with the city.
Smitherman is a seasoned recreation and parks leader with some 19 years with the city of Santa Maria, overseeing major community programs, park initiatives, and nearly $30 million in grant funding.
Prior to his government work, he spent 12 years with the YMCA managing programs serving participants from infants to seniors.
“It is an honor to serve as the Interim Recreation and Parks director with the city of Santa Maria,” Smitherman said. “I look forward to collaborating with our community and dedicated team to enhance our parks and recreation programs, ensuring they continue to enrich the lives of all our residents.”
With a staff of 94 and budget of about $24.6 million, the Recreation and Parks Department maintains and operates 33 parks, about 10 community centers, numerous programs, the park rangers, and the city’s Urban Forest Program.
