San Marcos girls water polo wrapped up the weekend with a third-place finish in the Villa Park Tournament on Saturday.

The Royals fell to The Bishop’s in overtime in the semifinals by a score of 12-11, but bounced back with a 14-8 win over Valhalla High in the third-place game.

“I was proud of the way we played this weekend,” San Marcos head coach Chuckie Roth said. “We had some hard battles, and we learned a lot about our areas of growth.

“I know this team is committed to being the best we can be, so I’m looking forward to practice and having more opportunities, as I know we will improve.”

The semifinal battle was a back-and-forth affair, as San Marcos held a 2-1 lead after the first and the game was tied at 4-4 at halftime.

The Royals jumped back out in front 7-6 in the third quarter, but The Bishop’s came back to tie it in the fourth and send it to overtime. There, The Bishop’s took control and held on for the one-goal win.

In the victory over Valhalla, San Marcos held a slim 3-2 lead after the first before erupting for five goals in the second behind two from Shea Estabrook to pull away for an 8-3 lead.

The second half was more of the same as the Royals held off any comeback effort to secure the third-place showing.

San Marcos will host crosstown rival Santa Barbara High on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
