Carpinteria High boys soccer went on the road and came away with a 4-2 league victory over Malibu High on Wednesday in Malibu.
The Warriors dominated the opening stages of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a goal by Carlos Garcia on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
The one-goal advantage held into halftime as the Carpinteria High defense continued to have its way with the Sharks.
In the second half, the Warriors doubled their lead on a shot from inside the box by Adrian Levinson that found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
While Carpinteria seemed on its way to a comfortable win, Malibu came charging back and scored back-to-back goals with 15 minutes left in regulation to tie the game up in the final stretch.
However, the Warriors regained their footing and responded with two quick goals of their own courtesy of Gerardo Mejia and Garcia to pull out the win.
“It was a very complicated game towards the end,” Carpinteria High head coach Edgar Mendoza said. “Credit to Malibu for not giving up, and at the same time, credit to my boys for taking care of the mistakes that happened, and getting back those two goals to get us back on track to win.
“I want to point out Carlos Garcia, Rooney Torres, and Eric Carbajal for being key parts to all of our goals.”
The Warriors will play host to Nordhoff on Friday.
Girls Soccer
The Carpinteria High girls soccer team earned a shutout 2-0 win over Malibu on Wednesday in Carpinteria.
The Lara sisters combined for the first Warrior goal of the night in the 37th minute. Evelyn Lara, a senior, played a ball into her freshman sister Joselyn, who beat the goalkeeper and scored for a 1-0 lead.
Carpinteria High rounded out the scoring in the 67th minute with a free-kick goal courtesy of Vivian Huskins to bring the game to its final score of 2-0.
“Malibu is organized and well coached and I knew it would take some individual effort and some patience to break their lines,” Carpinteria High head coach Freddy Martinez said. “The Lara sisters created just enough chaos in their defense to give us our opportunities tonight.
“On the defensive side, we had some great performances tonight from sophomores Emerson Hill and Michelle Cornejo.”
The Warriors (10-1-2, 6-1-1 Citrus Coast League) will be on the road against Nordhoff on Friday.
