The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that felony charges have been filed against 34-year-old Segun Ogunleye, a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office custody sergeant accused of stealing more than $175,000 in overtime pay.
The criminal counts number 114, a District Attorney’s Office spokesperson said on Monday. They include, among others, money laundering, false entries in records, presentation of fraudulent claims, grand theft and misappropriation of public funds.
“The complaint further alleges excessive loss enhancements based on the amount of public funds taken,” a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office said.
Ogunleye is currently on administrative leave, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick told Noozhawk last week.
Deputies arrested Ogunleye at his Fillmore home last week and booked him at the Ventura County Jail. He was released and appeared in court in Santa Barbara on Monday.
Deputies began investigating Ogunleye in October after noticing “irregularities in Ogunleye’s timecards spanning several months,” Zick said last week.
The Sheriff’s Office alleges that Ogunleye, starting in 2023, “fraudulently coded” more than $175,000 for shifts he did not work. He oversaw and approved overtime pay in his job as a custody sergeant, per the Sheriff’s Office.
Zick said no other suspects are believed to be involved and no other “similar fraudulent activity” was found.
