The city of Ventura invites professional artists or artist teams to submit proposals for the creation of a permanent tiled sculpture or sculptural installation as part of Phase II of the Surfers Point Improvement Project.

The opportunity is open to artists living and working in California, but special consideration will be given to those based in Ventura County and Santa Barbara County.

Online applications are open through noon March 2 at www.cityofventura.ca.gov/PublicArtOpportunities.

Based on community surveys and workshops, the project theme is a combination of Marine Life and Surf & Beach Culture.

“The artwork should serve as a cultural and ecological narrative, visually connecting visitors to the coastal marine life, beach and surf culture with a color palette of natural coastal tones,” the city said.

Total budget for the public art project is $165,000, which is all-inclusive and must cover all costs associated with the design, fabrication, transportation, and installation of the artwork.

“This project is a leading example of coastal restoration in the country,” said Rebecca Ellis, Ventura Parks and Recreation manager. “And the selected public artwork will serve as a signature feature of the site, welcoming residents and visitors from around the world.”
 
The public art project is part of the larger Surfers Point Phase II Project, which is funded by a $16.2 million grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy.

“The major coastal improvement effort unites environmental restoration, public access, and cultural enrichment at one of Ventura’s most iconic shoreline destinations,” the city said.

The goal is to enhance safety for beachgoers and protect the shoreline from further erosion.
