Carpinteria High girls soccer went on the road and earned a 3-0 victory over Burbank High in the CIF-SS Div. 5 playoff opener on Thursday in Burbank.
“With the number of freshmen and other underclassmen we had, I was expecting a bit of nerves from some of our young athletes, but I was pleasantly surprised by how composed and comfortable they looked out there today,” Carpinteria High head coach Freddy Martinez said.
“As we move into the Round of 16 we know things will continue to get tough, but know this group is battle-tested and will fight for everything they can.”
The Warriors will play host to Coachella Valley on Saturday for a second-round matchup.
Carpinteria opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Yoselyn Lara found fellow freshman Charlotte Cooney, who finished off the pass for the goal and the 1-0 lead, which held into halftime.
The Warriors doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Kaydance Gardner buried a penalty kick.
Carpinteria put the finishing touches on the win in the closing minutes of regulation as Lara scored on an impressive individual effort to bring the game to its final score of 3-0.
Cate 4, Pioneer 0 (Div. 7)
The Rams dominated both ends of the pitch en route to a CIF-SS Div. 7 playoff-opening win over Pioneer on Thursday in Carpinteria.
Cate will remain at home and roll out the welcome mats for Desert Christian Academy on Saturday.
Mountain View 2, Bishop Diego 0 (Div. 8)
The Cardinals’ season came to a close with a first-round loss to Mountain View in the CIF-SS Div. 8 playoffs on Thursday.
“Mountain View was a physical team; more physical than we could possibly emulate in practice, and I’m proud of the way our team didn’t back down,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “As we told the team following the game, we are all so very proud of their effort this season.
“Coming off a year when the team not only didn’t score in a game but also lost every contest, to make the playoffs is such a testament to their hard work and willingness to buy into what our staff thought were areas we could improve.”
Bishop Diego went 5-11-3 overall this season and secured a second-place finish in the Frontier League.
“Our goals were to score in a game and to win one game this season – I think it’s safe to say the team did all of that and more,” Bennett said. “This program will be set up for success in the future, and I can’t wait to see how they continue to grow.”
