Lompoc Valley Medical Center has expanded its maternity services with the addition of Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) care, further enhancing comprehensive, patient-centered options for women and families in the community.
The Certified Nurse Midwife service will work collaboratively with the hospital’s two board-certified OB/GYN physicians Dr. Rodney Huss and Dr. Lloyd Trujillo to provide a team-based approach to obstetric and gynecologic care.
Nurse midwife services will include prenatal and postpartum care; routine gynecologic appointments; labor and natural birthing support; and participation in the on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 coverage for maternity patients.
“This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to providing accessible, high-quality care close to home,” said Yvette Cope, CEO. “Integrating Certified Nurse Midwife services strengthens our ability to meet the needs and preferences of the families we serve.”
Certified nurse midwives are advanced practice registered nurses with specialized graduate-level training in women’s health and childbirth.
They are qualified to manage low- to moderate-risk pregnancies; provide preventive and reproductive health services; and support patients throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum recovery.
The collaborative care model allows patients to benefit from both midwifery and physician expertise.
“By providing access to a Certified Nurse Midwife, we can offer the best of both worlds, providing continuous, patient-centered support while having immediate access to obstetricians for high-risk complications,” said Angela Fichtner, LVMC Perinatal Services manager.
“Midwives can focus on low-risk pregnancies and deliveries, allowing obstetricians to focus on high-risk pregnancies and surgical deliveries,” she said.
By expanding obstetric care services to include midwifery, LVMC said it is increasing appointment availability, providing additional labor support and offering families more options in how they experience pregnancy and childbirth.
