San Marcos High track & field hosted 13 teams at the Royal Classic on Saturday at Warkentin Stadium.

“(It was) lots of fun and a good experience for our new young runners,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said.

Logan Patterson Deakyne was the lone individual event winner for the Royals, finishing first in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 39.93 seconds.

“[Patterson Deakyne] has been wanting to break 40 seconds in the 300 hurdles for a while now and it was impressive he did it on his first race of the season,” Hantgin said.

Meanwhile, TJ Deakyne had a strong all-around performance with second-place performances in the long jump, high jump and triple jump. Margaret Deakyne also placed third in the high jump, long jump and 100 hurdles.

The San Marcos varsity girls squad of Elsie Tuttle, Samara Shalhoub, Layla Llewellyn, Autumn Richardson and Sofi Hernandez ran well as a pack and finished in ninth through 12th place.

The Royals will be on the road against Moorpark next weekend.
