San Marcos girls beach volleyball won its sixth straight contest with a 5-0 sweep of Rio Mesa on Thursday in Oxnard.
“The matches provided a good opportunity to work on some things the team has been focusing on in practice,” San Marcos head coach Tim Loomer said. “With the heat making things uncomfortable, the girls worked to be efficient in their matches and were largely successful.”
Alina Stapf and Reese Paskin of the Royals battled their way to a three-set comeback win in the No. 1 matchup, 17-21, 21-14, 15-7.
The next four San Marcos duos got the job done in quick two-set matchups to roll to the sweep.
Paige Hoadley/Evyn Miller won at the twos, 21-9, 21-7, Jeannie Johnson/Kelsie Rowe won at the threes, 21-10, 21-9, Lila Westmacott/Isla McClintock won the No. 4 matchup, 21-3, 21-11, and Mailia Hetrick/Kelsey Helton rounded out the sweep with a 21-13, 21-3 win.
The Royals (15-1, 7-0 Channel League) will host Thousand Oaks on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Ventura 4, Santa Barbara High 1
The Dons dropped their Channel League matchup with the Cougars on Thursday in Ventura.
“We definitely had some chances to get this win, but just weren’t quite able to capitalize on it,” Santa Barbara High head coach Kristin Hempy said.
The Santa Barbara High No. 1 duo of Lola Heckman and Kira Elliott rolled to a two-set victory, 21-16, 21-18, to account for the team’s lone point.
“Both did a nice job challenging and working against the Ventura block, and serving very aggressively,” Hempy said of her top pairing.
While three of the four losses came in straight sets, Paylin Marcillac and Blake Saunders of the Dons battled to a three-set loss in the No. 2 matchup, 15-21, 25-23, 14-16.
“I’m so proud of [Marcillac/Saunders]. They battled with so much heart and hit the sand for every play,” Hempy said. “Blake served especially strongly, and Paylin was so smart with her offense. It will be a fun rematch when we play Ventura again.”
