San Marcos boys golf edged out Valencia by one stroke for a non-league victory on Wednesday at La Cumbre County Club.

The Royals ended the day with a team score of 380 to narrowly beat out Valencia’s combined mark of 381 on the par-71 course.

“Today was an extremely exciting match,” San Marcos head coach Jeff Ashton said. “Even though some of the guys didn’t feel like they played their best overall, there were some clutch moments coming down the stretch.

“High school golf has moved to a live leaderboard, so all the players know where the match stands and it was neck and neck throughout.”

Andy Keenan had a standout round for the Royals, earning medalist honors with a four-under-par 67.

The rest of the San Marcos golfers were Axl Wedhammar (75), Austin Downing (76), Adam Kabaretti (81) and Ethan Klawuhn (81).

Klawuhn, Keenan, Wedhammar and Kabaretti all made clutch shots down the stretch to help pull out the one-stroke victory.

“It was exciting to see the guys have to perform under pressure and I’m proud of the way they responded in that moment,” Ashton said.

The Royals will take on crosstown rival Dos Pueblos next Tuesday.

The Chargers came out on top in a three-way matchup with the Yellow Jackets and Tritons on Wednesday at River Ridge Golf Course, a par 72.

The Dos Pueblos duo of Parker Hickman and Orlando Ramirez-Gijon picked up co-medalist honors by finishing the day with an even-par 72.

Hickman’s round was highlighted by an impressive hole-in-one on the final hole, which was an island green from 170 yards out. Meanwhile, Ramirez tallied five birdies for his career-low score.

They were followed by fellow Chargers Sam MacNaughton (76), Colt Roberts (76) and Connor Nightingale (77).

“We had a few players who never played this course and they took their time and managed the course well despite the heat and the tricky greens,” Dos Pueblos head coach Kevin Ahlers said. “Parker is one of our hardest-working guys, and I am happy he was rewarded with such a special moment.”

The Chargers (7-3, 1-0 Channel League) will take on Camarillo on Thursday for a non-league match at Spanish Hills.
