Eighteen people were evacuated from a Westside Santa Barbara neighborhood Saturday morning after a report of a gas leak outside, according to Santa Barbara City Fire Battalion Chief Jon Turner.

Emergency personnel first responded to a report of a gas leak on the 500 block of W. Sola St. at around 9:13 a.m.

The leak was audible, according to emergency radio traffic.

“We investigated to figure out whether the leak was on the meter… or on the street side of the residence,” Turner told Noozhawk. “Fire crews requested a gas company response.”

The gas company was on the scene as of 10:30 a.m. and Santa Barbara City Fire was waiting on a crew to do a crimping operation, Turner told Noozhawk.

Responders evacuated 18 people from 11 residential units in the area of the leak.

Workers reportedly broke a gas line, Noozhawk photographer Peter Hartmann reported from the scene.
