Dos Pueblos track & field’s Ashton Smedley made program history at the Meet of Champions Invitational on Saturday at Arroyo High School in El Monte.

Smedley placed fifth in the mile race with a blazing time of 4:11.87 to beat out current teammate Owen Abbott, who set the record last week at the Nike Indoor Nationals.

At the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York, Abbott ran the mile in 4:12.1 and Cullen Gulley crossed the finish line in 4:13.94. Abbott’s time broke Bryan Fernandez’s record of 4:12.62 set in 2010.

In Saturday’s Meet of Champions, Gully set a new personal best in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:55.84 to finish second in his heat.

Meanwhile, Phil Contakes inched closer to the Dos Pueblos 3,200-meter race record, placing seventh overall with a time of 9:04.95.
